Newborn Session Information

Congratulations!

What a wonderful time in your life.  This is my favorite type of session, and I think these photos are so important because our newborns are only this ‘new’ for such a short amount of time.   The photos will become keepsakes for you and your little one.

When scheduling, it is very important to have the shoot within the first 12 days of life if possible.  During the first 12 days, babies are more curled up and sleep easily while being moved around.  Setting up a tentative date in your third trimester is recommended to assure your spot on my calendar.   If baby decides to come early or late, contact me ASAP and we will adjust our session date.

For a newborn session, I prefer to shoot in my studio located in Broad Ripple, which was built in March of 2013, specifically for newborns and little ones.  I use strobe lights for all shoots that take place in the studio, so evening sessions are an option too.  Studio lighting ensures I have perfect lighting every time.  You will also have full access to all of my props, wraps, hats, bowls and baskets.   So all you need to bring is a sleepy baby.  I encourage parents to take this time to relax, take a nap, write thank you cards or catch up on emails.

I can also photograph baby in your home.  These are always beautiful sessions built to capture the family on a more personal level.   I only bring a few hats and wraps with me.  I typically shoot in the nursery, parents bedroom and maybe on a comfy couch or by a window.  I use the natural lighting in your home, so it’s important to do these sessions at certain times of the day.

Siblings are welcome to have a few shots with baby (as well as a family shot), but it is recommended that young siblings only stay for a short time if possible.  It is important that we have a calm and relaxing environment for baby and sometimes the studio is a challenging place for toddlers for a long period of time.

I mostly photograph newborns naked or wrapped, so no need to worry about outfits.  It is best for the baby to be full and sleepy for the photo shoot.  I know, easier said than done!  Allow at least 3 hours for the shoot.  Parents that follow the newborn guide suggestions are usually in the studio about 2 hours.

Props:  I have a huge selection of hats, wraps, headbands, buckets bowls, backdrops.  Please let me know if you plan to bring a prop. There are props that I like to stay away from because they may not be safe or will not photograph well, which interrupts the creative process.  I encourage parents to just come with a sleepy baby.  Keepsake items like a quilt or knitted hats are great.

Once you book your date and make a deposit, I will send you a complete newborn guide that has lots of tips and tricks for a relaxing session.  I cannot stress how important it is to follow this guide.  It might be the difference between a 3 hour session and a relaxing 1.5-2 hour session. We will also chat about what type of colors and decor you have in your home.  We want the photos to go well with your taste.  Once I get a feel for what you like, I will design your session layout and we can tweak things as we go.

Post shoot, I will upload edited images to my client album site within about two-three weeks. From this site you may download high resolution images, order prints (only if you want) or simply view the photos.  Galleries are password protected, but you are welcome to share your password with anyone you choose.  I will also email you a link of the high resolution edited images as well as low resolution logo images for web sharing via Dropbox.  Please be sure to use images displaying my logo for any type of web sharing.  I highly suggest that you burn the images to a disc as well as save them on your computer.  Dropbox links will be active for about one month and then will be taken down to make room for new sessions.  Also, I always try to send you a quick little sneak peak the same day as the shoot so you can share your little bundle:)

If you have further questions please free to contact me, I’d love to hear from you!

~Jan

Hello, I was interested in getting a newborn session done for my son. He was just born early Friday morning, June 29th. I have 2 friends from high school in champaign, Il that have used you and I love their pictures. I was just interested if you had time this coming week or next week to do a session. If you could get back to me by email or phone… 217-390-2252, and we could talk and see what you think. Thank you so much.

Hey Allison! I JUST saw this! Now I know why I missed it, the comments get jumbled up with tons of spam and I miss real comments sometimes.

I know this should have been done before the baby was born, but we had a surprise visit! Do you do in home shoots? And do you have any appointment times for the week of Nov. 10?

Hi! I am due Nov 22nd with baby girl #3 and was wondering you had availability for a shoot. I am also debating having it at my house but I’m not quite sure yet on that. Please let me know!

    Thanks,
